Wang Sheng is a scholar in a small town. While on a walk one morning, he meets a young lady carrying a bundle and hurrying along. As she is moving along with some difficulty, Wang quickens his pace and catches up with her, and finds that she is a pretty girl of about sixteen. The beautiful young lady is called Yan Xiao Yu.  Wang invites her to his own study.

The young lady is frightened by a nightmare and wakes Wang up. She seduces him and he falls in love with her. The wife of the scholar comes to visit Wang at his study near his residence. Convinced that she should leave him alone to concentrate in his study she leaves with the maid and is puzzled by the two tea cups on the table and wonders who has been visiting him.

One day, Wang meets a Taoist priest in town, who looks at him in astonishment, and asks him who he has met. "I have met nobody," replies Wang. "Why," says the priest, "you are bewitched; what do you mean by not having met anybody?" But Wang insists that it is so, and the priest walks away saying, "My goodness! Some people don't seem to know when death is at hand." This startles Wang, who thinks of the girl; but then he thinks that a pretty young lady cannot possibly be a witch, and begins to suspect that the priest merely wants to make money out of the fear he creates for him.

When he returns, his library door is shut, and he can not get in, which makes him suspect that something is wrong. Wang looks through the window and sees a hideous devil, with a green face and jagged teeth like a saw, spreading a human skin upon the bed and painting it with a paint brush. The devil then throws aside the brush, gives the skin a shake and throws it over his shoulders. The devil becomes the beautiful girl he has met.

Terrified at this, Wang hurries away with his head down in search of the priest……….
